Jazz op zondag — spring 2024
After the return of our jazzy Sundays last fall, we are ready to rock again this spring! The recipe remains unchanged: almost every Sunday there's a free jazz concert or dj set in the most beautiful café of Leuven. We welcome you four times a month: twice with a live concert, once with a night curated by LUCA Jazz (with a jam session) and once with a dj set. Additions to the programme will follow throughout the next weeks, so keep an eye on this page.

Henri Hinke is onze Jazz op Zondag in-house DJ die houdt van lange cross-genre sets. Jullie kennen hem al van zijn speelse, groovy mix die kan variëren van jazz, funk, soul, disco tot house, acid en breaks. In het kader van de Sdban takeover maand speelt hij zondag 14/04 enkel Sdban classics uit hun roster. Na een korte paasvakantie break zijn we deze zondag weer helemaal terug. Kom langs voor een gezellige avond vol met parels uit het Sdban archief, en vier mee de kick-off van de Sdban-takeovermaand.

Orson Claeys, een 25-jarige muzikant uit Gent, ontwikkelde al op jonge leeftijd een liefde voor muziek. Zijn muzikale reis begon met klassieke piano op tienjarige leeftijd en leidde hem naar de kunstschool Muda. Op zeventienjarige leeftijd ontdekte hij jazz, geïnspireerd door Herbie Hancock. Beïnvloed door musici zoals Aaron Parks en Shai Maestro, zoekt Claeys voortdurend naar zijn unieke geluid binnen de hedendaagse jazz.
Orson Claeys is vers bloed bij het Sdban Ultra label en bewijst zichzelf als jonge, sterke nieuwkomer. Benieuwd naar de unieke sound van Orson Claeys? Ga mee op een zielroerende reis met Oriana Ikomo en ontdek THE HEALING, een EP die de diepgaande gedaanteverandering belicht die ze in de afgelopen jaren heeft doorgemaakt. Met krachtige sounds en teksten weeft ze R&B, Gospel, Ambient, Jazz, Electronic en Pop samen. Van de etherische intro tot het ritmische 'IMMA PLEASER,' toont Oriana moeiteloos haar veelzijdigheid. THE HEALING is niet zomaar een EP, het nodigt uit om de schoonheid van persoonlijke groei en zelfontdekking te ervaren. Oriana Ikomo, gevestigd in Brussel, is een opvallend nieuw talent met voorgaande successen in muziekwedstrijden Soundtrack en Studio Brussels De Nieuwe Lichting, waarmee ze zich als een nieuwe kracht in het Belgische muzieklandschap profileert.
Oriana Ikomo bracht op 22 maart haar debuut EP uit onder het label van Sdban Ultra. Zondag 28/04 gratis te ontdekken in STUKcafé als officiele releaseshow in Leuven. Kom vroeg en blijf laat, want voor en na de set van Oriana Ikomo spelen we enkel Sdban classics in het café voor éxtra gezelligheid.

The jazz department of LUCA – Campus Lemmensinstituut in Leuven is a small and dynamic department of one of the four Flemish institutes for higher music education. The department was established in 1985 by a.o. Bert Joris and Free Desmyter, and has become a household name in the Belgian jazz scene. Students of LUCA Jazz will play an ensemble concert during Jazz op Zondag, followed by a jam that is open for all.

Discover SPOOK, a band that first appeared at the Citadelic Festival in Ghent in 2019. SPOOK consists of Simon Segers on drums (De Beren Gieren, Black Flower, MDCIII), Filip Wauters (BackBack, the Whodads) on pedal steel and guitar, and Nicolas Rombouts (Ottla, Dez Mona) on bass. They mix jazz, progrock and krautrock into a powerful sound. Their acclaimed debut album SPOOK was released in 2022 on the W.E.R.F. label. Album number two is set for a release later this year, but you can enjoy a preview in STUKcafé!
