JOHANSEN SKOVSTED ARKITEKTER (DK)

The ready at hand

Johansen Skovsted Arkitekter's range is limited, but the work he has done bears witness to a strong vision and an autonomous architecture. In its own words, seeks to bridge the gap between contemporary building processes and materials, and basic architectural values. Without losing themselves in nostalgic materiality, they design objects and buildings that are inspired by primordial forms. Vernacular architecture and anonymous, industrial constructions have an important influence on their work. This goes hand in hand with a strong focus on the local level. Not only do they treat the actual context of the construction site with great respect, they also show an interest in local building methods. Moreover, they always try, through their interventions, to strengthen the place in its individuality and to deepen its identity.

Johansen Skovsted Arkitekter regard architecture as an existential given. It's about finding a place in the world, a home and creating a stage for human interactions. They see architecture as a medium to play with landscapes, buildings and cities and all the history that goes with it. This puts them, as Danish architects, on the shoulders of Jorn Utzon. In him they find the same humanism and the same attention to the location.

Despite the gravity of their vision, the levity of existence is clearly evident in the built work. The buildings are sculptural and often have a seemingly random composition. This gives them a strong autonomy at the same time gives one the feeling that these buildings have existed for a long time. As a construction that seems to have produced itself. A series of pump stations along a river have an upper floor seemingly composed of the formwork of the concrete facade. The design of the construction of a viewing tower is specifically aimed at the available strengths of a neighbouring steel processing company. The monochrome grey of the steel tower merges into the Danish grey days.

Johansen Skovsted Arkitekter was founded by Søren Johansen and Sebastian Skovsted. The firm is based in Copenhagen.

MATTER OF ARCHITECTURE

The matter of architecture not only refers to the pragmatic idea of architecture, but also to the added value that is created and felt within what is built. The AUDITORIUM 18/19 lecture series represents a spectrum of architecture and matter as such: what is ‘built’ as a physical materiality, what is ‘not built’ as space, light and time, and ‘the poetic’, ‘the metaphysical’ in search of the essence of architecture. Seven selected speakers bring a comprehensive story.
