Waarom ik 40 jaar biefstuk en kaas at, en toen veganist werd
In this lecture in Dutch, Sofie Mulders tells us how farm animals really live and what the benefits of a plant-based diet are for the environment and the climate
In December 2019, journalist Sofie Mulders became vegan overnight. Two years later, she released a book about that choice: “Why I ate steak and cheese for 40 years, and then became vegan”, published by Pelckmans.
In this book, she examines what life is like for animals in the livestock industry - spoiler alert: not good - and what impact the production of animal products has on the environment and climate. She spoke to farmers, vets, biologists and other scientists. She also weighed up her choice of veganism, always underpinned by scientific insights and facts.
In her lecture, Sofie Mulders will elaborate on how farm animals really live their lives - and how this is at odds with the pretty talk and pictures - and on the benefits of plant-based food for the environment and climate.
Sofie Mulders (1976) studied Germanic languages at KU Leuven, was a secondary school teacher of Dutch and English for ten years, and has been working as a journalist since 2010. She writes mainly for De Morgen.
