Hiatus / Daniel Linehan - sspeciess
After a first week in April, Daniel Linehan returns to STUK for two weeks, in the creation process of the group piece sspeciess, premiering January 2020 in deSingel.
Later this season, Linehan will return to STUK with his recent solo performance Body of Work (2019).
For sspeciess, Linehan was inspired by British philosopher and ecologist Timothy Morton and his ideas on co-existence and symbiosis. Five dancers - Gorka Gurrutxaga Arruti, Anneleen Keppens, Victor Pérez Armero, Louise Tanoto and Linehan himself – share the stage with musician and performer Michael Schmid. Together they borrow their bodies, breathing and voices to the musical and choreographic score of sspeciess. Sound echoes breathing. Breathing exhales sound. Dance and music intertwine: music creates not only the environment for dance, but dance also creates an environment that supports listening to the music.
Daniel Linehan moved to Brussels in 2008, to complete the Research Cycle at P.A.R.T.S. He has created some ten performances, including Zombie Aporia, Gaze is a Gap is a Ghost, Un Sacre du Printemps, dbddbb and more recently Third Space with composer Stefan Prins, and Body of Work. With Michael Helland he developed the participative project Vita Activa. In the book A No Can Make Space he collected texts and poetic fragments from his artistic practice, together with graphic designer Gerard Leysen (Afreux). From 2013 to 2016 he was artist in residence in at the Opera de Lille, and he is Creative Associate at deSingel from 2017 to 2021.
