Ula Sickle - The Sadness
The Sadness brengt drie performers samen rond het genre 'Sad Rap', een howegrown muziekstijl die de afgelopen jaren ontstond op Soundcloud en andere muziekplatformen. Met grotendeels eigen producties combineert het emotionele teksten over depressie, vaak verwijzend naar dood en zelfmoord, op melancholische instrumentals en hiphopbeats. In een tijd waarin de toekomst onduidelijker is dan ooit, onderzoekt The Sadness het heerstende gevoel van toekomstloosheid. Onder muzikale leiding van de Japans-Amerikaanse muzikante Lynn Suemitsu worden zelfgeschreven teksten van de performers gecombineerd met pulserende ritmes en zware bassen. In een overlap tussen dansvoorstelling en concert wordt het werk uitgevoerd in een ronde, intieme setting - performers en publiek delen dezelfde ruimte. The Sadness verkent live muziek maken als een collectieve daad die de performers (en het publiek) samenbrengt. Thematisch staan de klimaatcrisis en gevoelens van traagheid, stilstand en angst centraal. The Sadness wil niet preken voor eigen kerk, maar een stem geven aan onze onderdrukte angsten, en gevoel gebruiken als krachtige tool voor empowerment en actie.
Ula Sickle (CA/PL) is a choreographer and performer based in Brussels, Belgium. From a background in contemporary dance, she works across disciplines and in collaboration with artists from other domains such as the visual arts, contemporary music or architecture. While her work takes many forms, from video to installation to live performance, she focuses on a choreographic approach to movement and a work on perception and reception, specific to the live arts.
Her interest in looking for an alternative to the cannon of contemporary dance, has led her to seek out performers who embody other movement histories. Frequently centered around strong performers, she searches for forms of choreographic writing, where the cultural coding and political power of ‘popular’ dancing can be revealed or where the musicality and materiality of the body itself can take center stage.
