Between February and June 2022, artist duo Robbert&Frank Frank&Robbert will land in the public space in Leuven with a combination of projects. They invite us to discover their world of visual language, DIY rituals and omens, turning Leuven into an Robbert&Frank Frank&Robbert snowglobe for a re-enchanting experience.
Meaningful encounters between an individual and a sentence/an image, between two individuals or many in a collective experience, are at the core of the practice of Frank&Robbert Robbert&Frank. Their work channels an attitude of hope, resilience, and being awake in the world.

Opening: Go Away Sorrow of the World - large

A banner is mounted on a large lighting pole that reads 'Go away sorrow of the world', a mantra which they developed in 2008 and whose physical carrier changes from time to time. Please join us for the official inauguration of this temporary monument (or monumental work) with a cozy get-together around fire pits, Go away sorrow of the world-soup, a dash of music and speeches!
Participatory project: DIY Shrines
12 February - 6 July
For the exhibition project As You Think So Shall You Become Robbert&Frank Frank&Robbert designed and developed 100 flat-pack shrines or small sanctuaries to distribute among the people of Leuven during their events. Create your own personal rituals around the 'shrine' and give it a meaningful place in your life. Robbert & Frank will help you on your way.

The public space is provided with organised waiting areas where functionality and unsociability prevail; an eye for vulnerability or architectural details is often absent. Robbert&Frank Frank&Robbert is an artist duo that, based on their practice as visual artists and performers, focuses on these precarious places. They see the squares, parks and streets as the canvases to activate their art practice. From this sensitivity, they developed since 2015 a series of small wooden suitcases, designed to fit the dimensions of train and plane hand luggage. During the Flemish Residency in Berlin in 2019, these portable artworks evolved into small intimate shrines. The shrine is stripped of its religious connotation and presented as such. They are exchange booths, time capsules, memory vessels, or small boxes that can accommodate a ritual. During this roundtable, Frank and Robbert will, on the basis of this personal narrative, enter into a dialogue with students from the design studio 'Space for the time-in-between' (Sint-Lucas Ghent / course Interior Architecture).

Robbert&Frank Frank&Robbert is an artist duo active on the border between visual art, performance, theatre and interventions in public space. They investigate human interactions, power structures and concepts such as transformation, friendship and humour. In this online talk, they will elaborate on their machine that tries to banish suffering from the world, which was activated in the public space of Leuven on 12 February. The talk is organized in the framework of an international curator’s visit, led by Cas-co and is open to the public.
Masterclass DIYShrines

In this workshop Robbert&Frank Frank&Robbert share their practice with 40 students from all over the world who together follow the course 'Personal Growth' at the International Educating Class of UC Leuven-Limburg. The South African philosophical concept Ubuntu - loosely translated as 'I am because we are' - is a guiding principle and forms the basis for sharing stories and listening to each other. Robbert & Frank, together with the students, go in search of what 'peace building' and 'becoming changemakers' can mean in a world full of challenges
DOORS OF PERCEPTION. SUMMER/WINTER

Installation
Doors of Perception is a mural installation by the Ghent artist duo Robbert&Frank Frank&Robbert in two parts. On the wall next to the entrance of SLAC (Dirk Boutslaan 60-62) you can find the Winter intervention. At Abdij van Park, near the vegetable garden, the Summer version is installed. Two line-drawn figures with triangle heads, abstract versions of Robbert & Frank, open a door to a summer and winter landscape with bisons, symbolizing abundance, and the merging power between the spiritual and earthly.

Robbert&Frank Frank&Robbert
Since 2012, Frank and Robbert go through life as the artist duo Robbert&Frank Frank&Robbert. This intense collaboration forms the basis for their artistic practice and symbolizes their vision on friendship, collectivity, interplay and knowledge sharing. Together, they realise a multidisciplinary body of works, containing objects, prints, installations, videos, actions in public places and cross-over performances on the border between arts and theatre. With their works, they actively relate to the global society and formulate questions and poetical alternatives. Their work has been presented in solo exhibitions in a.o. Fred&Ferry Gallery (Antwerp), Croxhapox (Ghent), Netwerk (Aalst), Lage Egal Gallery (Berlin), Buda (Kortrijk) and Be-Part (Waregem), and in group shows in a.o. Baro Gallery (Sao Paulo), Charlama Contemporary Art Gallery (Sarajevo), Panthera Art Space (Brussels), Belvédère (Rotterdam), KW Institute for Contemporary Art (Berlin), Dr. Guislain Museum (Ghent) and BOZAR (Brussels).
They graduated with a master’s degree in visual arts from KASK Ghent in 2012. Since January 2021, they are represented by Fred&Ferry Gallery (Antwerp).
